Learning activity details

(Sometime during the 11th century, the people living in the Shogawa River valley built homes in a style known as gasshō-zukuri. This A-frame design is constructed using only wood, rope, and thatch for the roof.

Due to the isolated nature of the region, the homes that comprise the Historic Villages of Shirakawa-go and Gokayama have been mostly untouched by modern development. Visitors to the prefectures are essentially taking a trip back in time, which is what earned the villages UNESCO Heritage Site status.)
