eMAGINATION LAB: Past To The Future
Past To The Future: A Science – History – Writing - Literacy Project Based Learning Experience.
• This isn’t a lesson, or a unit or just some content learning – This is about changing the student experience
• This isn’t about old school learning – This is about Gamification of the classroom, changing the classroom into a playing field.
• This isn’t your grandmother’s learning – This is about 21st Century Learning Skills and a 21st Century classroom.
• This IS a NEW Educational Experience
• This IS bigger than the walls of a classroom, this IS about blowing out what education means.
Students explore history to understand how the world changes and then use that knowledge to address common day issues and devise a plan to make a change in the world. Their change must somehow effect their own or their communities future. Students find out that in 200 years their own community and school are gone. In a series of messages from the future, they are provided with information and a challenge to make a change in the world.
Driving Question: If you (we) could initiate one change in your present life that would shape or change the future what would you do and how can you use history (the past) to justify/support your idea/cause(s)?
Theme: All history is about change. We need to connect our lives to historical events in order to engage our students into understanding history, AND creating a ‘want to know more’ environment.
Challenge: to engage students into history by using the research to connect it to the (their) real world.
Past to the Future is game changing for education. The classroom becomes gamified, student driven and project based.
Collaboration: Three teams: The Actionist, The Explorationist, & the Innovationist
The Actionist: Lead Change through Action.
The Explorationist: Lead Change through Discoveries
The Innovationist: Lead Change through ground-breaking ideas and inventions
• Teams work together to discuss ideas and challenges. Each player supports the team through daily challenges (individual and team challenges) Teams work together to develop ideas for a final group project. Teams are spread over three classes, so in order to foster communication, students use social media to discuss ideas and decisions.
• Solving Problems and Resolving Issues: all teams will face challenges and must coexist in order to survive in this game. Teams create their own solution for resolving conflict and support each other’s learning. Their shared responsibilities are essential for the success of the team!
• Each team will create a Final Product that supports their decided Mission Statement. What will the entire team do to change History? How will your interdependent team work create an environment that could change the world?
Knowledge Construction: By gamifying the classroom knowledge is constructed at every turn. Students explore history to understand how the world changes and then use that knowledge to address common day issues and devise a plan to make a change in the world. Their change must somehow effect their own or their communities future. The work is interdisciplinary: students integrate Social Studies, Science, Literacy and Writing in order to successfully complete their final project. Students analyze and evaluate resources to drive their work. Students will then apply their knowledge to their group project, each students bring their own work to be used for the greater good of the team
Real World Problem Solving and Innovation: Change in their school and community, solving problems that they see as important. While grade levels will dictate theme students will direct focus. Connecting what has gone on before them; students will make research relevant to their own lives. Students are driven by the idea that they can ‘change the world’ Each team will have a different focus for their final project. The Actionist will use actions in their final project (one example of this
