Learning activity details

Over the past year Kirklandneuk Primary School have been taking ICT to the next level by employing Digital Leaders throughout the P4-7 classes. We started this process in August 2013 by asking interested children to fill in an application to become part of the team. After this the children were asked along to an interview to explain what skills they could share and show off their ICT skills to the interview panel. The Digital Leaders when then chosen and the work could begin. With ICT changing rapidly in the 21st century it is important that children are being taught and are able to experience the most up to date technology to enhance their learning and give them the skills they need for 21st century life. However, some teachers can find this daunting and are unsure where to start.
The digital leaders in Kirklandneuk are trained every Wednesday lunch time and then train the other classes and the teachers on that particular skill. The confidence they have gained is second to none! It is incredible to see these young leaders flourish and grow.
The children have been involved in a variety of projects over the past year. They are able to show the other children in the school how to use Glow and Windows 365 tools incorporated in this with confidence in the ICT Suite. They have use Windows PowerPoint to take full school assemblies on internet safety. They have also used Power Point to take a CPD session for other teachers in our authority on how to set up Digital Leaders in their own school . As well as that they took part in the Scottish Kodu Kup and loved every minute of it.
This session the children will have a big focus on training the rest of the school and teachers how to use Kodu effectively in their classes.
The children recently taught from Primary 1 to Primary 7, the basics of how to use a tablet. They did this confidently and professionally. This is just the beginning for the Digital Leaders in Kirklandneuk and we can't wait to get even better. This year we are recruiting and training new Primary 4 DLs and this time the children will take in the applications forms and interview the new prospective Digital Leaders. The children are able to work co-operatively with each other, the staff in the school and the other pupils. They will have to use their decision making skills to decide who will be the next Digital Leaders and to create their lesson plans. The children are able to take full responsibility for not only their own learning and skills, but also for the other children in the school. We have also featured in the Chamber of Commerce Business Matters Magazine.
