Majority of School teachers who are working in high schools and preparatory schools in Ethiopia have minimum or no skill at using the computers. Thus they are used to writing exams, short notes and workbooks using pen and paper. Mark-books are on papers and end of term student report cards are prepared after tedious work by the teachers.
Besides all teachers depend on the textbooks they and the students have as the only source of knowledge. This is because the teachers do not have access to and skill to use computers. The teachers are unable to deliver content beyond the textbook. It is generally known that a teacher can benefit from the vast amount of authentic resources on the Internet.
This course is delivered in the Northern Region of Ethiopia, Tigray Region, in two towns, namely Maichew and Humera. British Council Ethiopia have sponsored me to setup a 20 user digital hub (computer laboratory)at each town in selected schools. The digital hub deploys Microsoft Windows Multipoint Server and has Internet connectivity.
ICT teachers in the selected schools and neighbor schools were invited to help on the setup of the digital hub right from the start. The ensures that they have hands on skill on setting up the networked think client system driven by Microsoft Windows Multipoint Server. Thus future maintenance can be done by these ICT teachers with support from us.
After the setup of the digital hubs, 20 teachers were invited for two day TOT training on basic Microsoft Office applications and Internet skills. Microsoft Office applications like Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint and AutoCollage skills were provided to the trainees. The trainees were introduced to the Microsoft Learning suite DVD and Online resources. Teachers professional development resources and Microsoft digital curriculum fascinates the trainees during the training.
Tools like Microsoft Math, Microsoft Math plug-in Word, Maths Worksheet Generator, and Chemistry Add-In For Word were amaizing application for these trainees.
The Trainees were give a through guide on how to search the Internet, select authentic material, communicate with others through email, best practices on messaging, privacy and security.
A total of 40 TOT trainees were trained and We will use these trainees to cascade ICT skill trainings to many more.
